Don’t Sleep on Vitor
Vitor Belfort must’ve felt like the invisible man last Saturday, as the entire main card analysts and fighters talked about his next opponent Chris Weidman facing off against either the winner of Rockhold/Machida or Jacare.
Although there were a few “I’m not looking past Belfort’s” from the champ, even Weidman was talking about defending his belt in Madison Square Garden in December.
Don’t get me wrong: I think Weidman is the clear favorite to win his next bout in The Octagon™, but you’d be a fool to count Vitor Belfort out entirely.
Remember when he got Jon Jones in an arm bar and almost ended the fight, to the shock of, well, everyone?
Even now, there is excited speculation that Weidman’s next bout would be at the December Madison Square Garden event.
Not so fast… Who would he fight if he loses to Vitor? Jacare?
Would a Belfort vs. Rockhold match be a “Madison Square Garden” sized event? It certainly wouldn’t have the same significance…
Professional MMA still isn’t legal in New York, by the way, and there’s a chance it still won’t in December.
It’s an exciting thought, though. Madison Square Garden is one of the world’s legendary venues for fights, and a UFC event there would be huge.
But slow your roll, until a few major hurdles are cleared.
