Fedor vs. Hendo: When Stars Collide! …Right?

First off, let me begin by saying that I’m looking forward to Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson just as much as any non-Roy Nelson fight. (I reserve the highest realm of anticipation for fights starring my personal hero, Roy “Big Country” Nelson)

That said, I can’t help but notice all the blogs and websites calling this match between Fedor “The Last Emperor” E. and Dan “Hendo” Henderson (who looks like a bear to me, which is why whenever I played the bear in Tekken, I thought of it as playing Hendo…) a “clash of stars” or “a fantasy match for the ages”… and so on.

One for the aged, more likely.

Look: I’ll admit I missed a whole lot of action while I was off “living life” and that included the rise of both of these guys. I have no respect for Fedor based on watching him beat opponent after opponent without expression, I have respect for him because… well… everybody goes on and on about him like he’s a legend, and I accept that.

Dan Henderson to me is an Olympic wrestler for the USA. I’ve seen him fight a few times, but not during his prime (I’m not counting YouTube views) and I think that I’m not unlike a lot of MMA fans: It’s a growing sport, and has grown tremendously recently and that’s brought in a lot of new fans who don’t have the experience of watching these guys in their prime.

In fact, they seem kinda over-hyped. I mean, I half-wonder if Fedor is a star because everybody keeps repeating that he is. I feel the same way about Alestair Overeem. These guys just haven’t impressed me with their recent performances, so while I accept that they’ve accomplished things in the past that has gained them the respect of the fans and media, I’m entirely unimpressed with what I’ve seen them do recently.

When I hear that this fight is it for one or both of these guys with Zuffa, I get it. MMA is a fast-moving sport, and I don’t think either of these guys can hang with the top of their division in the UFC. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I just don’t get the hype.

I haven’t really made any predictions on this site yet, but here’s one: Fedor-Hendo will be a disappointing fight.
