Hector Lombard to Zuffa?

Hector Lombard is a beast! Muscle-bound and possessing massive striking ability, he’s run through the competition in Bellator to become their Middleweight Champion..

What you wouldn’t know from watching his stand-up fighting is that he was an Olympic Judoka with a fourth degree black belt in Judo and a black belt in BJJ! He currently trains at American Top Team in Florida.

Born in Cuba, Hector emigrated to Australia, where he remains very popular. So popular Dana White got an earful about him the last time he was down under.

His 8 wins and lightning-quick knockout of Jay Silva (six seconds!) at Bellator 18 are both promotion records. The 34-year old has been fighting MMA since 2004 and as of January 30, his contract with Bellator ended.

With Bellator poised to move to Spike TV in 2013, and Lombard being one of their stars, it makes sense for them to re-sign him. But if Zuffa is pursuing him, expect that there will be a battle for his services.

Assuming Zuffa were to sign him, where would he fit? When this was brought up around the MMA Rants Today offices, the question was, “Do we want to see Lombard take on Anderson Silva?” with the answer being, “Do we want to see Lombard get knocked out?”

After a little discussion, I came to the conclusion that there was a great spot for Lombard under the Zuffa umbrella, and it is with Strikeforce.

Since Strikeforce is ending their heavyweight grand prix and the heavyweight division moving over to the UFC, it makes sense for the promotion to beef up it’s other divisions. Look for it to be aggressively signing talent.

Lombard would be a key addition to it’s middleweight division. Luke Rockhold, Jacaré Souza, Tim Kennedy, Robbie Lawler…

Lombard would fit right in.
