Monday Hangover: Douglas Lima

Did you see Bellator this weekend? No? You’re not alone. And, for the first time in recent memory, I can honestly say: you didn’t miss a whole lot.

One of the things you would think would be a terrible idea to miss, being an MMA fan like you are, was the championship bout between Champ Ben Askren and Welterweight tournament winner Douglas Lima.

You’d be wrong, but I’m getting ahead of myself…

Ben Askren is a powerhouse wrestler. Think Dan Henderson but smaller. Once he takes someone down, he dominates them, controlling them on the ground, landing punches and stifling any submission attempts they throw up on him.

Douglas Lima is an explosive striker, and is no slouch on the ground, having 11 wins by submission to 7 wins by KO/TKO. How would Askren deal with this explosiveness?

Askren took Lima down at will and did what he does. It was so bad, that at one point the announcers felt the need to tell the audience how good Lima was. That Lima was a top Welterweight in spite of how Askren was making him look like a man-child.

I’ve seen Lima fight. He is a solid fighter. He’s fun to watch. But you wouldn’t have known it watching him against Askren…

Take two aspirin, and call an elite wrestler to join your training camp, Douglas Lima. You’ve got this week’s Monday Hangover.
