In a move that sent shockwaves through the MMA community, Zuffa released Strikeforce superstar heavyweight Alistair Overeem.
Overeem, long considered a top heavyweight and current holder of the Strikeforce heavyweight title, recently pulled out of Strikeforce’s heavyweight grand prix tournament, citing scheduling issues that interfered with an injury to his toe healing in time for the September bout. The Overeem camp also publicly speculated that Alistair might decide to box one of the Klitschko brothers next, instead of fighting for the promotion which was purchased by UFC owner Zuffa in March. After being taken out of the heavyweight tournament, he was scheduled to fight a kickboxing match in October as part of a United Glory event in Russia.
It was widely thought that these moves were done to set up contract negotiations with Zuffa, as Overeem’s current Strikeforce contract was one fight short of complete.
Zuffa is sending a message, It doesn’t matter how big a name you are, they won’t put up with antics like this. This would be consistent with Dana White’s past method of doing business. The man doesn’t f23k around!
