UFC 142 Aldo vs. Mendes Full Fight Card and Predictions
UFC in Brazil, again! It’s gonna be epic as far as fan support and attendance goes. The rest of the card…I’m not sure. I like all of the fighters on the card, I like most of the match ups, yet, I get the eerie feeling this could go real bad…Maybe it’s the pressure for these guys fighting on home turf that makes me weary. Regardless, I’m gonna watch and enjoy.
The big fight on the card is Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes for the Featherweight Title. But the big news, dominating all of the industry is Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson’s failure to make the 185lb limit. Something Rumble has failed to do a few times at welterweight. He went up in weight and still couldn’t make the limit. Dana White is pissed, the media is ravenous, and the fans are pissed, not to mention Vitor Belfort who now has to fight a substantially bigger fighter because Vitor was the professional, did his job and made weight. It sucks all the way around. FOr Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, for Vitor and for the most likely soon to be out of a job Rumble Johnson. Bellator could use a big Middle Weight to face Hector Lombard, looks like they just got one. Or two if Marquardt ends up over there after leaving BAMMA UK this week.
It’s been a good news week, now it’s fight time. It’s gonna be an interesting night. Post your predictions in the comment area, remember we are gearing up for prediction contests starting in the next few weeks. Get involved now! As always, My predictions are in green. Enjoy.
Preliminary card (Facebook)
- Featherweight bout: Felipe Arantes vs. Antonio Carvalho
Felipe Arrantes is taking this fight on extremely short notice. For that reason alone, I’m going with the Brazilian. Felipe Arantes for the W.
Preliminary card (FX)
- Welterweight bout: Ricardo Funch vs. Mike Pyle
I’m picking the American. Sue me. Mike Pyle
- Featherweight bout: Yuri Alcantara vs. Michihiro Omigawa
I’m picking who I want to win, not who I think will win. Michihiro Omigawa.
- Heavyweight bout: Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Ednaldo Oliveira
This fight has the potential to be FOTN. Gabriel Gonzaga is reborn and rejuvenated according to his record and his statements. I’m excited to see the new Gonzaga. Ednaldo Oliveira is an undefeated HW phenom with endless potential according to many. I think Ednaldo is gonna be a great test for Gonzaga, and Gonzaga is a great first fight in the UFC for Ednaldo. I’m gonna go with Oliveira by T/KO.
- Lightweight bout: Thiago Tavares vs. Sam Stout
Thiago Tavares had a great showing against Spencer Fisher, winning by TKO to my utter dismay. It was a good fight. Sam Stout is coming off a great KO win over Yves Edwards, I’m expecting these two to let their hands fly. One can hope. I’m gonna make this pick only because Tavares beat Fisher, a fighter I really enjoyed watching fight. Sam Stout by T/KO.
- Lightweight bout: Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim
Edson Barboza has one of my favorite names in MMA. Barboza…it’s so…Piratey! ARRRRR! Barboza is undefeated and has won FOTN honors in his last two fights. He comes to win. Terry Etim has more experience and has 4 sub of the night honors. The chances of this being a boring match are low. If Barboza can keep it standing he pulls a decision, if Etim can get him down and keep top contol, he gets the decision. I don’t think Etim will be able to submit Barboza, and I dont’ think Barboza will be able to T/KO Etim. Regardless, I’m going with Brazil on this one. Edson Barboza by decision.
- Welterweight bout: Erick Silva vs. Carlo Prater
Erick Silva had a beautiful KO win against Luis Ramos at UFC 134, now he’s back to stake a claim on the WW division. Carlo Prater is making his UFC debut, the pressure is on him. Becasue of the pressure, I’m going with Erick Silva by T/KO.
- Middleweight bout: Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Massenzio
Rousimar Palhares is a different kind of fighter. Some might say ‘crazy’. I’m gonna go with ‘eccentric’. He’s had some strange events happen in the Octagon™, in Jiu Jitsu tournaments, and by some accounts his gym. I won’t go into details, but, I’d be concerned if he was my opponent. His Jiu Jitsu is spectacular, even by spectacular standards. He can grab a sub from any position. Mike Massenzio is also a solid grappler, very solid. I still give the advantage to Palhares. Mike gets the standing advantage, but I don’t think this one will play out on the feet. I’m going with Palhares by sub. Hopefully he lets go when told to.
- Catchweight (197 lb) bout: Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson
I’m very dissapointed in this fight. I’m dissappointed that Rumble Johnson couldn’t make weight…again. Regardless of whether it was a ‘Medical Emergency’ or not (It’s suspicious) it looks bad for Rumble. His history doesn’t help his cause. I wanted to see a ‘new’ Rumble face the legend that is Vitor. Instead, we get a catch weight fight with a guy who’s gonna be ‘huge’ compared to his opponent because he didn’t make weight and got a pass to appease the Brazilian fans. I’m picking Rumble for the win, but I don’t like it. Anthony Rumble Johnson by T/KO.
- Featherweight Championship: José Aldo (c) vs. Chad Mendes
Jose Aldo is a beast. Beast with a capital B. He’s been on a tear since entering the WEC. His only real competition has been agains Mark Hominick. In a fight where he dug deep and pulled out an amazing victory. Sporting only 1 loss on his record, I’m wondering if Aldo is up for the challenge yet again. He hasn’t been as aggressive in his last 2 fights, leading many to believe he’s bored with the division and the competition it provides. I think the constant top level championship training is beginning to wear on the Champ, he wants to enjoy the fame and money a little bit, making it hard to keep the level where it needs to be. It’s just a theory. Chad Mendes is undefeated, has also been on a tear since entering the WEC and can grind any opponent down for the win. He’s a grinder, Aldo is aggressive. Chad has takedowns and superior wrestling, Aldo has BJJ and crippling leg kicks. It’s a good matchup. I can’t pick against Brazil for a title fight, I just can’t. Jose Aldo by decison. (I hope he wins by T/KO to show the division who’s the man)
